Introducing our Lead Garden Designer...
Landscape Designer - Kerry Speirs
"Many landscape designers can be identified by their gardens. Not me! I have built my career on responding to client’s individual personalities and desires.
As a result, my portfolio, were I to assemble one, would feature a wide range of gardens and 'one-off' landscape elements created over the past 10 years, both as an independent designer and as part of wider design and build collaborations."
A brief history:
After graduating from Unitec in 2011 (top student in the Dip.Landscape Design programme that year) Kerry created Twist Creative Landscape Design. ‘Twist’ offered traditional bespoke landscape design services to homeowners and it turned out she was pretty good at it!
A previous career in floristry helped, along with the myriad of garden types experienced in her own properties across the country…Greymouth, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North and central Auckland to name a few!
A favourite project completed during her 'emerging designer' years were for a Grand Designs New Zealand property and a retail courtyard garden in a Newmarket shopping precinct. During this time Kerry also worked with some of Auckland’s top garden designers, assisting with design and drafting services ‘behind the scenes’, eventually settling into a challenging but rewarding niche working alongside landscape contractors, providing design services to offset their construction expertise.
7 years later and some fabulous projects Kerry has been an integral part of during this time have:
- Been magazine featured | Urbis, NZ House and Garden, NZ Gardener and In Your Backyard
- Been included in the Bi-annual Auckland Garden Designfest | 2017 & 2019
- Award-winning Designer: Won Gold in the Landscaping New Zealand Landscapes of Distinctions Awards | 2019
So, why the move to the DIYdesigns model?
"The satisfaction of working on high end, high profile projects is immense, however in recent times the need for cost effective, achievable design solutions has become more prevalent and without doubt busy homeowners (myself included) are now looking for ways to simplify the landscaping process. Twist's new design offering 'DIYdesigns' has evolved from this demand.
Our model intersects the fields of landscape design and technology and adds a touch of online shopping to boot. 'DIYdesigns' marks a new chapter in my landscaping career, and I am excited to be (I believe) the first to bring this type of offer to the New Zealand market."
